019: Munchie Monday, or Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream
Thanks to a whole host of reasons, we’re celebrating Snack Sunday on a Monday this week, thus dubbing it Munchie Monday! And this week, our snacks was a huge treat from Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream. Trust us, this one is worth the wait
Mt. Desert Island sent us home with a pint of ice cream each, as well as a bowl for Sleeping Beauty, who was supposed to be joining us, but ended up in a KLS episode, and wasn’t able to make it.
Being us, Riley ended up with The Dude, a white russian ice cream made with Allen’s Coffee Brandy, mixed with Nutella to give a nice compliment to that nutty, sweet coffee flavor. Kelsea ended up with Butterbeer, obviously based on the drink from Harry Potter, mixed with their strawberry. Regardless of flavor, this ice cream is rich and sweet, but perfectly balanced. Riley’s Dude really did taste like a white russian, and Kelsea’s Butterbeer tasted better then the butterbeer she’s had at Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Riley was able to finish her ice cream before we even finished recording our promos for the episode, but Kelsea didn’t quite make it, as the richness really caught up with her. Sleeping Beauty loved his, and is insisting that this is our new ice cream spot for the summer.
Whether you’re Downeast (for non-Mainers, that’s way up north), in Portland, or in DC, please make sure you check out Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream during these warmer days. The staff is lovely, the flavors are ones you won’t find anywhere else, the scoops are generous, and we can’t wait to go back.
The location that we visited is on Exchange Street in Portland, ME, but they also have two locations in Mt. Desert Island, ME, one of which is their production facility, as well as a location in Washington, DC! We also heard from Natalie, one of their managers, that they’re working on a location in Japan, too!
Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream makes all their own ice cream, by hand, in small batches, one at a time. According to Natalie, she holds the record for most batches made in a day, topping out at about 100, but that was for some basic sweet cream, and anything flavored takes much longer.
Speaking of flavors, scroll back up there and check out all those flavors. So many. So good. Of course, when we went in, we had to try SO MANY different flavors, and Natalie, along with her pals, Mariah and Jade, were so patient with us. They all knew their shit about what was in each flavor, and how they’re made, so they were able to easily guide us toward flavors we may like but had never been brave enough to try, or recommend combos for us.
