021: Snack Sunday, or Figgy's
This week, your gal pals ventured to Figgy’s, for a very excellent snack, including the fried chicken of our dreams and possibly one of the best ice cream sandwiches ever created.
More properly, Figgy’s Takeout & Catering is tucked behind Yordprom Coffee, with their storefront facing Walker Street. Honestly, if you didn’t know it was there, it’s easy to miss, but once you notice the handful of picnic tables with bright red umbrellas and the amazing smell, you’ll be able to find it.
Figgy’s is headed into their 5th summer in Portland, fresh off of owner-chef Natalie’s (aka Figgy) win on Chopped. Before owning her own amazing fried chicken stand, Figgy was a stay at home mom for several years after having her beginning in restaurants in Riley’s hometown.
We ended up leaving with half a fried chicken, a couple of the flakiest biscuits in the world, a pint of incredible mac and cheese, and a homemade ice cream sandwich.
We ate the sandwich in the car on the way home to record, and we’ve rarely been happier. The cookie was mostly chocolate, held together with the barest amount of buttery cookie, and the ice cream was homemade strawberry. So. Fucking. Good.
Besides the fried chicken, Figgy’s also does really incredible sandwiches, and we were definitely eyeing the wings on the menu. Their lunch special is super affordable, and probably one of the best deals in Portland.
Whether you’re local or just visiting us in Portland during the busy tourist season, make sure you take a few steps off the beaten path for a snack at this great neighborhood takeout spot. And make sure to listen in on Weed Wednesday for more!
Figgy’s specializes in fried chicken, and they definitely live up to the hype. When we got there, Natalie invited us to join her in the kitchen, where we were mostly in the way, but had a moment to chat with her and her small staff while she made us our snack.
When we asked them what they wanted folks to know about their food, they had two answers. First of all, everything is made to order, and fried chicken takes a minute, so be prepared to wait while your food is being made. Secondly, when you order a whole fried chicken, you’re not getting, like, a WHOLE bird in one piece. You’re getting two breasts, two thighs, two drumsticks; you know, all the pieces of a whole fried chicken.
