015: Snack Sunday, or Boda!
It’s Snack Sunday, and we were so lucky to check out Boda this week! Boda has been a fav of both gal pals for years, but somehow we’d never gone there together, so we had an awesome date night together.
Riley started with Thai Tea, while Kelsea opted for water cause we had to record later, even though she really wanted one of their amazing Old Fashioned cocktails.
Boda serves their food Thai family style, which means that food comes out when it’s ready, which was great for us. We just started snacking, and food kept appearing like magic, and it was amazing!
One of the first things that showed up was Kelsea’s crispy squid, which comes with this amazing spicy sauce. The squid pieces were perfectly sized and cooked - crispy, but never rubbery. And that sauce was just scrumptious!
We also got the quail eggs, which come in a hot cast iron pan, with scallions and a soy based sauce, which is so much more complex than that. The edges of the tiny eggs get crispy, but those yolks stay runny and rich. They’re the perfect size to pop in your mouth, but they’re so filling!
Riley also got the tom kha gha soup, her absolute favorite. For some folks, there’s a smell associated with this soup that can be a turn-off, but the taste is out of the world. This soup was full of perfectly poached chicken, tons of fresh mushrooms, and the broth was that perfect coconut lime savory. Riley’s perfect comfort food, indeed.
As if we hadn’t consumed enough food at this point, we also got an order of their wings. Riley wasn’t feeling great in her tummy area, due to med changes, so we went with the less spicy, but they were still incredible, with just a hint of heat. They come with house pickled carrots and daikon radishes, which were a great compliment.
We had to stop eating before we finished these, but we did bring them home to the recording bed, and finished them up while watching TV.
Finally, our server asked if we wanted dessert. Kelsea groaned, but Riley asked what they could make us to go. She ended up getting the mango sticky rice, which we also enjoyed while we were recording our episode. It was the perfect balance of salty and sweet, and the mango was perfectly ripe.
Thanks so much to Zak and the whole crew from Boda for having us in. We had a great time, and if you’re a Portlander, please go give them your money. If you’re not local, well, enjoy this pictures, check out their website, and start planning your trip to smoke and eat your way around Portland!
Boda serves these amazing skewers, and they have ton of options, but both Riley and Kelsea love the bacon wrapped dates, as we finally discovered on this lovely friend date. The bacon is salty, the dates are sweet, and that’s what is so perfect about Thai food, in general.
