003: Snack Sunday, or The Proper Cup
We were so lucky to find our first Snack Sponsor in The Proper Cup. The Proper Cup opened about a year ago, and is located at 500 Forest Ave in Portland, Maine. They brew Flight brand coffee, which was just named one of the top ten roasters in the US, and offer pastries from The Portland Sweetery, Standard Baking Co., The Purple Whisk, and gluten-free goodies from Bam-Bam Bakery.
We love that they fly a rainbow flag out from, letting us know this is definitely a safe space for some queer gal pals like us!
Immediately on walking in, you encounter an amazing Honda motorcycle, which dominates the room, as part of the decor. To us, any coffee shop that has a motorcycle inside is a-okay!
Once we took in the decor, we were actually able to make it to the counter to order some amazing treats. We were helped by Sasha, and armed with some recommendations from The Proper Cup’s owner, Rachel, so we had an idea of what we wanted, which was great, because the treats all looked amazing.
With Sasha’s help, we finally settled on a Honey Juniper Latte and GF Brown Sugar Pop Tart from Bam Bam Bakery from Riley and a light roast coffee (room for cream and sugar!) and an Everything Cheddar Scone from The Sweetery for Kelsea.
For Riley’s latte, the juniper syrup is homemade and decidedly NOT overwhelming the way it can be in gin, so even Kelsea liked it. Kelsea’s light roast was sweet and fruity, and she even ended up putting way less cream and sugar in then normal, so you know it’s good.
The scone, y’all. Savory scones are pretty much one of Kels’ favorite thing in the world, and this one surpassed the mark. It was not dry the way scones can be, but not so heavy from the cheese that the fluffiness was lost. Bagels are too much for Kelsea’s sensitive tum, but this scone gave that great everything bagel flavor, without making her feel like she just ate a paperweight.
And that pop tart. First of all, look at how damn pretty it is! Gorgeous, and, honestly, who doesn’t want bright sprinkles on their adult treats?!? Honestly, if you didn’t tell us, we wouldn’t have known this was a gluten free treat. The crust was light and flakey, and the filling was rich. It’s honestly everything you wanted your pop tarts to be when you were a kid, but you didn’t know any better!
Make sure you check out Episode 003 on Weed Wednesday this week for how you can get a discount at The Proper Cup!
